• Who can apply?

We invite all PhD-students and young researchers working on projects in Translation or Interpreting History to apply for this year’s summer schools. Applications from all countries, different disciplines and all stages of research are welcome. Interested MA students are welcome, if there are spots available.

Applicants should have a demonstrable interest in translation or interpreting historical issues and the contents of the summer school. Ideally, their PhD-projects or current research projects have a certain thematic connection to the summer school.

The selection of participants will take into account whether their PhD-projects fit in with this year’s summer school focus.

  • How to apply

The application should include:

  • CV (max. 2 pages)
  • a list of publications (if existing)
  • a letter of motivation, including thoughts on what you want to work on and learn during the summer school and what knowledge/ method / ideas you would be willing to share at the summer school  (max 1 page)
  • outline of research project / thesis (max 1 page) a description of the methodological component of the PhD-project along with questions connected to this component which could be of interest to all participants

The deadline for applications is: April 5, 2020

Participation fee

€ 350 for students of the University of Vienna;

€ 370 for students from other university (including inscription, insurance and access to library).

to be paid in advance after being confirmed as a participant of the summer school.

The participation fee covers:

  • Tuition fee
  • working material, print outs
  • coffee, tea and non-alcoholic beverages, fruit and snacks throughout the week
  • lunch (full meal) on Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday

For the duration of the summer school, the participants will be admitted to the University of Vienna as „external students”, which means having health and accident insurance and enjoying access to all libraries of the University of Vienna.



The University of Vienna will provide two applicants for the summer school with a scholarship (value € 350 or € 370). If you want to be considered for a scholarship, please indicate it in your application  e-mail. Please note that only official students of the University of Vienna or from one of our partner universities can be candidates for this scholarship.

Other scholarships or grants that might be of interest to you: If you want to apply for a scholarship or financial aid from an exchange program or other institution to cover your costs, we will gladly assist you in the process. (e.g. summer school scholarship of the European Society of Translation Studies (link), Erasmus+, Ceepus)

Accommodation & Travel

Accommodation and travel costs are not included in the participation fee. We are happy to recommend you hotels or hostels near the venue.
